IJmuiden

IJmuiden lies at the mouth of the North Sea Canal, on the North Sea coast of North Holland, and is a city shaped by its relationship with the sea. It was founded in the 19th century during the construction of the canal that links Amsterdam with the North Sea, opened in 1876, and it grew quickly into a major port and industrial centre. Its position made it a focus of maritime trade, fishing and shipbuilding, and today it is still one of the Netherlands’ most important harbours. The sea locks, rebuilt in 2019 with the largest sea lock in the world, are among the biggest engineering works in the country. The industrial character of IJmuiden is balanced by a natural setting, with wide sandy beaches, dunes and the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park nearby.

One of the main attractions is the long beach, known for clean sand, space and good facilities. The IJmuiden Lighthouse, a cast-iron structure from the 19th century, is another landmark that recalls the city’s nautical past. For history buffs, the Bunker Museum IJmuiden shows the role of the city in World War II, with well-preserved bunkers and guided tours; the Germans fortified the coast here as part of the Atlantic Wall to protect the entrance to Amsterdam and the harbour.

Nature lovers will enjoy the closeness of the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, a large area of dunes, woodland and wetland that is home to deer, foxes and many birds. The park has hiking and cycling trails, viewpoints and chances to watch wildlife. Forteiland IJmuiden, or Fort Island, is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and can be visited by ferry; it has historic fortifications, guided tours and views of the coast and harbour.

IJmuiden is easy to reach from Amsterdam and Haarlem. The city has no railway station of its own, but regular buses link it with both. It is also a regular port of call for cruise ships, which gives it a cosmopolitan touch. There is ample parking for those who come by car, and the compact centre is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle.

Seasonal advice is useful when planning a visit. The best time for IJmuiden is from late May to early October, when the weather is mild and the beaches are at their best. The summer months, from June to September, bring the warmest weather, long days and a lively calendar of events and festivals. Spring and autumn are quieter and good for walks in the dunes. Winters are colder and windier, with fewer visitors but a dramatic coastal atmosphere.
