Enschede

Enschede lies near the German border in the province of Overijssel, in the Twente region, and is its largest city. Its roots go back to the Middle Ages, but it was the textile industry that shaped its identity in the 19th and early 20th centuries and turned a modest town into a major industrial centre. A great fire in 1862 destroyed much of the old town, which is why the centre is more modern than that of many Dutch cities. Today traces of the textile heritage survive in the architecture and museums, and the city has reinvented itself as a centre of education, technology and culture, with the University of Twente, founded in 1961, at its edge. In 2000 a fireworks disaster devastated a neighbourhood, and the rebuilt district and memorial are part of the modern city.

The core of Enschede is the Oude Markt, a lively square surrounded by historic buildings, cafes and terraces. It is the social centre of the city, where locals and visitors gather for coffee, meals and people-watching. The square is dominated by the Grote Kerk, a landmark church whose tower rises above it. Every Saturday the city holds a busy market with fresh produce, flowers and local specialities.

Art and culture are central to Enschede’s appeal. The Rijksmuseum Twenthe is one of the Netherlands’ leading art museums, with an impressive collection of Dutch and international works from the Middle Ages to the present. The city’s Synagogue, a striking example of early 20th-century architecture, is open to visitors and shows the region’s Jewish heritage. The Twentsche Foodhal provides a modern culinary experience in a former industrial building, with stalls serving dishes from around the world.

For those interested in science and innovation, the campus of the University of Twente is worth a visit, with modern architecture, green spaces and public art. Family-friendly attractions include the Natuurmuseum Enschede, a natural history museum, and the Grolsch story: the beer was brewed in Enschede for much of its history, and the Grolsch Veste, the stadium of FC Twente, carries its name. The old airfield, Vliegveld Twenthe, north of the city, is rich in aviation history.

Enschede is surrounded by green space and recreation areas, among them the Volkspark and the nearby Hulsbeek in Oldenzaal, which offer walking, cycling, swimming and picnicking. Further out, the Buurserzand heathland and the Haaksbergerveen nature reserve are good for walks. The city’s position makes it an excellent base for the wider Twente region, known for its countryside, traditional villages and cycling routes.

Getting to Enschede is straightforward, with direct train connections from major Dutch cities such as Amsterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle. The city can also be reached by car and has good public transport in the region. Once there, the compact centre is best explored on foot or by bicycle, and bike rentals are widely available.

The best time to visit Enschede is from mid-May to mid-September, when the weather is warm and the outdoor terraces, parks and events are in full swing. Spring and autumn are also pleasant, with moderate temperatures and fewer crowds, which makes them good for the city and the surrounding countryside.
