Walibi Holland is the largest theme park in the Netherlands, and it lies at Biddinghuizen, near Dronten, in the province of Flevoland, on land that was reclaimed from the Zuiderzee in the 1950s and 1960s. It opened in the 1970s and has grown from a modest family park into a large resort with many rides, shows and areas, and it attracts well over a million visitors a year. It is part of a European group of parks, and it competes with other regional parks for its mix of thrill rides and family attractions.
The rides are what most visitors come for. The park is known for its roller coasters, which include several record-setting machines. Goliath is a steel coaster with a steep drop and high speed, Lost Gravity was built with a distinctive layout, and Untamed is a hybrid coaster with a wooden structure and steel track that has been popular since it opened. There are also water rides, a drop tower and many gentler attractions for smaller children and families, with themed areas, play zones and a children's land. Height restrictions apply to many rides, so check the limits if you are visiting with young children. Shows and live entertainment complete the offer, and the park hosts seasonal events, notably the Halloween Fright Nights in autumn, when the park opens in the evening with scary scenes and actors.
Practical planning helps. Tickets are usually cheaper online than at the gate, and season passes are available for frequent visitors, but they are personal and non-transferable, and holders must show photo identification. The park is open on selected days, mostly in the summer and school holidays, so check the calendar before you go. Free wifi is available, and the park's app shows queue times and show schedules, which helps in busy periods. There are restaurants, snack bars and shops throughout, and lockers and rental services for the wet rides. Queues are longest at weekends and on hot days, and arriving at opening time is the best way to ride the most popular attractions.
Flevoland has other attractions for a longer stay. The nearby Dronten area has beaches along the Veluwemeer, and the lakes and nature reserves around are good for walking and cycling. The towns of Lelystad and Zwolle are within easy reach.
The park suits families with children, teenagers and thrill seekers. Plan a full day, wear comfortable shoes and bring a change of clothes if you plan to ride the water attractions.
