Stappersven

Stappersven is a small fen within the Kalmthoutse Heide, a large area of heath, pine woods and drifting sand that spreads across the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. The fen lies on the Belgian side, near Kalmthout in the province of Antwerp, rather than in the Dutch part of the reserve, so it is an excursion for walkers who are comfortable crossing the border. The surrounding landscape is protected as a cross-border nature park, and it is one of the largest heathland areas in the region.

A ven is a shallow, usually nutrient-poor pool in the heath, often fed by rainwater rather than a stream. Such pools are typical of sandy regions across the Low Countries, and Stappersven is one of the better-known examples in the Kalmthoutse Heide. Around the water, the ground is wet and peaty, with plants such as bog moss and cotton grass, while drier patches carry heather, birch and scattered pines. The mix of open water, reeds and low scrub makes a good habitat for dragonflies, frogs and a range of birds, and the light over the water changes through the day.

The heath itself is the main attraction. Heather flowers in late summer and turns the slopes purple, with the colour at its best around August and September. In autumn the grasses turn gold, and in winter the open ground can be frosted or misty. Sandy tracks and paths cross the area, and walkers can combine the fen with other places such as Pluisven, another small pool nearby. The paths are generally well marked, but a map is useful because the landscape can feel confusingly uniform.

Most people come to walk, cycle or photograph the scenery. Early morning and evening are the quietest and most atmospheric times, when low sun and mist transform the view. Stay on the marked routes, since the heath is a sensitive habitat and some areas are closed to protect nesting birds, and keep dogs on a lead where rules require it. Bring waterproof footwear, because paths can be wet, and sun protection in summer, because there is little shade.

The area suits nature lovers, birdwatchers and anyone who enjoys wide, quiet landscapes. Trains and buses link Kalmthout with Antwerp and Roosendaal, and from the village a walk or ride of a few kilometres brings you into the reserve. A visit can last an hour or fill a long afternoon.
