Stadhuis (City Hall)

The Stadhuis of Roermond stands on the Markt, the central square of this city on the Maas and Roer in Limburg, and it is one of the most prominent buildings of the old town. It was built around the year 1700, in the Baroque style of the period, and it has been altered and renovated several times since, though it retains the character of an eighteenth-century civic building. It remains the active seat of the city government, which gives it a living role rather than that of a museum.

Roermond has a long history as a town of trade, religion and administration. It received city rights in the thirteenth century and grew into the capital of a region known as Upper Guelders under Spanish and then Austrian rule, and it later became the seat of a bishop. The Markt was the place where markets, ceremonies and public announcements were held, and the town hall dominated it. Over the centuries the town suffered damage in wars and sieges, and in the Second World War, the fighting in late 1944 and early 1945 caused serious destruction, from which much of the centre had to be rebuilt.

The town hall has a symmetrical facade with tall windows and a decorated central section, and visitors can admire the architecture from the outside. There are no regular tours or tickets, as the building is used for offices, but the entrance hall and public areas can be visited during the opening hours of the municipal service, usually on weekdays. It is a simple stop, but a good starting point for a walk through the centre, since the square is surrounded by cafes, shops and terraces.

Other sights close by include the Sint-Christoffelkathedraal, whose tall tower dominates the skyline, and the Munsterkerk, a Romanesque church of Our Lady that is one of the most important medieval buildings in the region. The Stedelijk Museum Roermond presents local history and art, and the river Maas and the Park de Maas offer a green setting. The Gracht, an old canal, and the cellar called De Kelder add more points of interest.

Roermond is also known for its designer outlet centre, which draws shoppers from across the region, but the old town has a quieter appeal. The Stadhuis suits visitors interested in civic architecture and local history. Combine it with a coffee on the Markt, a visit to the churches and a walk to the river.
