St. Martinus Church

The Sint-Martinuskerk, also called the Grote Kerk, is the principal church of Venlo, the city on the Meuse in North Limburg. It stands on Grote Kerkstraat, close to the Markt, and its tall tower is the most prominent landmark in the old centre. It is a Gothic church, built in brick in the late Middle Ages, and it still works as a Catholic parish church as well as a place for visitors to admire the architecture and the interior.

The church is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, the fourth-century soldier-turned-bishop who is remembered for cutting his cloak in half to share it with a beggar. The church is open to visitors at set times, usually a few hours on certain days of the week, and may close for services and events, so it is worth checking the current schedule. No tickets are normally sold, and entry is often free, though donations are welcome. Because opening times are limited, plan your visit around them.
