The Sint-Nicolaaskerk is the Catholic church of Denekamp, a small town in Twente close to the German border, and it is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, children and merchants who is honoured in churches throughout the Low Countries. Denekamp lies in the eastern Netherlands, in the municipality of Dinkelland, and the region has a strong Catholic tradition, unlike most of the country's north, so the church is a focal point of the community. It is best known for its old stone tower, which is the oldest part and the feature that gives it historical interest.

The tower is a medieval structure of stone, and records suggest that a tower stood on the spot as long ago as the thirteenth century. The present form of the church is mostly the result of work in the late fifteenth century, and the building has been restored and altered since then. The stonework is the main thing to appreciate from outside, with its weathered blocks, buttresses and narrow openings, and the building is a protected monument. It is not always open inside, and visitors can see the church from the outside during daylight hours, which is the usual experience.

The tower contains historic bells, among them bells that date from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and they are rung by hand on special occasions in the life of the community, such as holidays, weddings or funerals. Bells of this age are valuable and rare, since many were melted down for metal in wartime, and the sound of old bells is a link with centuries of local life. If you are in the village when they ring, it is worth pausing to listen.

Denekamp has other attractions nearby that make a longer visit worthwhile. The Singraven estate, a country house with a working watermill on the river Dinkel, is one of the best known in the region, and the Dinkel valley is attractive for walking, cycling and canoeing. The border with Germany runs close by, and the countryside of Twente, with its hedged fields, woods and farms, is popular for cycling. The town of Oldenzaal, with its basilica of Saint Plechelmus, is a short ride away.

The church suits visitors interested in medieval architecture and local heritage, and cyclists looking for a historic landmark on a day in Twente. A visit takes about twenty minutes, and the tower is best seen from the churchyard in good light.
