Medieval gates and towers in historic Amersfoort
The Old Town of Amersfoort is a beautifully preserved medieval center that invites visitors to step back in time while exploring its cobbled streets and historic landmarks. Encircled by remnants of ancient city walls, the heart of Amersfoort is dotted with impressive gates such as the Koppelpoort, a striking Gothic structure that has guarded the northwest side of the town since the 15th century, and the fairy-tale-like Monnikendam Gate, set amid tranquil greenery. Another highlight is the Kamperbinnenpoort, dating from the 13th century, which once formed part of the city’s earliest defenses.
One of the most unique features of Amersfoort’s Old Town is Muurhuizen Street, where houses are built directly atop the foundations of the medieval city wall, creating a continuous ring of “wall houses” that are both picturesque and historically significant. The Tower of Our Lady, the third-highest church tower in the Netherlands, dominates the skyline and offers panoramic views for those who climb its steps.
At the center of it all is Hof Square, a lively gathering place surrounded by cafés and shops, where traditional markets and events bring the city’s history to life. The Old Town is easily explored on foot, with its compact layout and pedestrian-friendly streets. Whether you’re interested in architecture, local history, or simply soaking up the atmosphere, Amersfoort’s Old Town offers a charming and authentic Dutch experience.
