Koninklijk Eise Eisinga Planetarium

The Koninklijk Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker is a remarkable destination for anyone interested in astronomy, history, or ingenious craftsmanship. Built in the 18th century by Eise Eisinga, a local wool-comber and self-taught astronomer, this planetarium is the oldest functioning planetarium in the world. Eisinga constructed the intricate mechanical model on the ceiling of his own living room, using wooden gears and metal rods to accurately display the movements of the planets, the Moon, and the Sun according to the scientific knowledge of his time.

Today, visitors can marvel at the original planetarium room, where the mechanism still operates as it did over two centuries ago. The museum also features Eisinga’s historic workshop, a collection of antique astronomical instruments, and interactive exhibits on space and the solar system. The “De Ruimte” (Space) exhibition and a screening room with documentaries further enhance the experience.

The planetarium is open year-round, with hours from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–17:00, and Sunday from 11:00–17:00. Between April and October, it is also open on Mondays. Admission is €6.00 for adults and €5.00 for children aged 4–13, with free entry for children under 4. The site is largely wheelchair accessible, and combination tickets with other local museums are available. The Eise Eisinga Planetarium offers a unique blend of science, history, and Dutch ingenuity in the heart of Franeker.
