Kloveniersdoelen

Kloveniersdoelen is a seventeenth-century building in Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland, and it belongs to a group of buildings that tell the story of Dutch civic militias. A doelen was the headquarters of a schutterij, the citizen guard that defended a town and kept order in an age before professional police. The kloveniers were the members who carried the klover, an early type of firearm, and their house served as a shooting range, meeting hall and banqueting room. The Renaissance style of the facade, with its gables and tall windows, reflects the status that such guilds enjoyed in wealthy trading towns.

The tradition behind these buildings reaches far beyond Zeeland. In Amsterdam, the Kloveniersdoelen hung the group portraits commissioned by guard companies, and Rembrandt's Night Watch was painted for that very purpose. Middelburg's building is smaller than the famous ones, but it comes from the same culture of proud civic display, in which prosperous merchants and officers paid artists to record their companies and spent lavishly on feasting halls.

Middelburg suffered badly in May 1940, when German bombing and the fires that followed destroyed large parts of the centre. Many historic buildings were rebuilt, and the town today shows the result of careful reconstruction on old foundations. Kloveniersdoelen has been used in recent times as a place for meeting, dining and events, with a courtyard that gives the building a calm feeling away from the market square. Opening arrangements for the interior vary, so it is wise to check ahead before planning around a visit.

The building is easy to reach on foot from the main sights. The abbey complex, with its tall tower known as Lange Jan, lies a few minutes away, and the Koepoort, the Kuiperspoort and the Vleeshal gallery on the Markt can all be added to the same walk. The streets between them are lined with gabled houses, small shops and cafes, and the canals that ring the old town make pleasant routes.

Kloveniersdoelen suits architecture fans, history lovers and visitors who enjoy discovering how Dutch towns organised their own defence. A short stop to admire the facade takes only a few minutes, while a coffee or meal in the courtyard stretches that into an hour. Middelburg is a good base for exploring the rest of Zeeland, and a day here fits neatly between visits to Veere and the coast.
