Het Vissersmonument

Urk is a fishing town on the IJsselmeer in Flevoland, and for most of its history it was an island. The Noordoostpolder, reclaimed from the water in the 1940s, joined it to the mainland, but the town has kept the character of a place that lived and died by the sea. Its fleet is still among the largest in the Netherlands, and the harbour, the fish auction and the smell of the catch are part of daily life. A monument to those who never returned from the water is a natural part of such a community.

The Vissersmonument, the fishermen's monument, commemorates Urk's seafarers who lost their lives while fishing. Storms on the North Sea and the old Zuiderzee took many men from the town over the centuries, and families lived with that risk as a matter of course. The monument gives the community a place to remember them, and it is the setting for commemorations at which relatives gather and flowers are laid. The mood is quiet, and visitors are expected to behave accordingly.

The monument stands near the harbour and the sea wall, so a visit can be combined with a walk along the waterfront. From there, the open water of the IJsselmeer stretches out to the horizon, and the traffic of fishing boats coming and going gives a sense of how closely the town is tied to the sea. It is sometimes also called the Fishermen's Monument.

Nearby, the Kerkje aan de Zee, a small church by the sea, is another site that reflects the community's faith and history, since Urk is one of the more strongly religious towns in the country and many residents still dress in traditional costume on special occasions. The old lighthouse, the narrow streets of the old quarter and the stone called Ommelebommelestien round out a stroll around the old centre. Local dialect, still widely spoken, is often so distinct that other Dutch speakers struggle to follow it.
