Estate Nienoord

Nienoord is a country estate in Leek, a village in the Westerkwartier of the province of Groningen, and it is the grandest historic landscape in the area. The name belongs to a borg, the Groningen word for a fortified manor house, and the estate has been associated with noble families since the early sixteenth century. The present manor house is largely of the nineteenth century, built on the site of its predecessors, and it stands among gardens, ponds, lanes of old trees and a scattering of outbuildings. The overall effect is of a refined country seat in the flat northern landscape.

The grounds are the main attraction for many visitors. Paths wind through the park and past water features, and in places the planting is formal, while elsewhere it falls back into woodland. A seventeenth-century shell grotto in the gardens is one of the more unusual features, a small decorated structure that recalls the fashion of earlier centuries for garden curiosities. The estate is large enough for a long walk and also has areas for children to play and picnic, which makes it a popular family outing from Groningen city, about fifteen kilometres away.

The manor house holds the museum, which is covered separately as Museum Nienoord and is famous for its coach collection. An amusement park, Family Park Nienoord, shares the broader grounds and is a draw for families with young children, though it is a separate commercial attraction with its own rules and tickets. The estate also stages events through the year, from markets to concerts, and the programme varies from season to season.

The village of Leek has more to offer. The Reformed Church in the village has an interesting history, and the surrounding countryside of the Westerkwartier is a patchwork of small fields, tree-lined lanes and low farmhouses. Cycling routes connect the estate with neighbouring villages, and the nearby Leekstermeer is a lake used for sailing and swimming. The Drenthe border lies close, and the Hondsrug and the Drents-Friese Wold are within a short drive.

The estate suits families, garden lovers, history enthusiasts and anyone looking for a gentle day out in the north. Allow half a day if you plan to see both the grounds and the museum. Check the opening times, since the estate, the museum and the park may keep different hours, and wear comfortable shoes for the gravel paths. A restaurant on the estate makes lunch easy.
