Drukkerijmuseum Meppel offers a fascinating journey through the history of printing and communication, right in the heart of Meppel, Drenthe. Located at Kleine Oever 11, this specialized museum brings to life the evolution of the printed word—from prehistoric cave markings to the development of alphabets and the rise of modern printing technology.

Visitors can explore a collection of working printing presses, including lead-type and pounding presses, with regular demonstrations by enthusiastic volunteers. The museum’s hands-on approach makes it especially engaging for families: children can try their hand at printing a page themselves in the interactive “children’s printworks,” make paper in a traditional barrel, or embark on a scavenger hunt with a small prize at the end.

Guided tours are available Tuesday to Friday, 13:00 to 17:00 (the museum is closed on Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays), and knowledgeable staff are always happy to explain the mechanics and history behind the presses. Admission is €6.00 for adults, €4.00 for children aged 4–17, and €5.50 for seniors, with discounts for Museumkaart holders and families.
