Coastal cycling routes through Zeeland’s dunes

Cycling around Domburg is one of the best ways to see the coast of Walcheren, the westernmost part of Zeeland, and the town is a convenient base for rides of any length. A network of signposted cycle routes runs through dunes, woods, polders and villages, and because the land is flat apart from the dunes, it suits cyclists of all levels, including families with children and older riders. The sea air, the wide skies and the sense of space make a day on the bike particularly rewarding.

Domburg itself is one of the oldest seaside resorts in the Netherlands, with a long beach, a wooded dune area and a town centre that has cafes and shops. A path along the top of the dunes gives views of the sea and of the beach below, and an inland route through the woods provides shelter on windy days. In the early twentieth century, painters came to Domburg for the light, and some of their subjects can still be recognised in the landscape, a connection that is explained at the Marie Tak van Poortvliet Museum.

Longer rides lead to other places of interest. Heading southwest along the coast, cyclists reach Westkapelle, where a high sea dike protects the land and a church tower acts as a landmark. The dike was bombed by Allied aircraft in October 1944 to flood the island and force the German garrison to surrender, a story that is remembered in local museums and memorials. Further on are Zoutelande and the long beaches of the south coast, and inland routes pass through quiet villages with thatched barns.

The Dutch system of numbered junctions, called knooppunten, makes navigation straightforward. Each junction has a number, and you can plan a route by writing down a sequence of numbers and following the signs. Maps and apps are available from tourist offices, and rental shops in Domburg supply ordinary and electric bikes. Electric bikes are helpful when the wind is against you, which it often is on the coast.

Other outdoor activities in the area include golf and hiking, so a stay can be varied. Cycling suits almost everyone, but check the weather and wear windproof clothing, bring water and sun protection, and lock your bike when you stop. Spring and early autumn are especially pleasant, with fewer people and good light.
