Cultuurspinnerij De Vasim is a cultural venue in a former factory on the NYMA site in the west of Nijmegen, near the Waal river and not far from De Oversteek, the bridge that opened in 2013. The industrial setting is the point. A huge production hall that once made artificial silk has been given a second life as a place for exhibitions, performances, workshops and festivals, and the building keeps its raw concrete and steel character instead of hiding it.
The history is straightforward to follow. The NYMA works began in 1928 as an artificial silk, or rayon, spinning mill and grew into one of the largest employers in Nijmegen. The main factory building was completed in 1948 as a continuous-spinning plant, and after the textile business wound down it was used for a time by a company dealing with fly ash, which is where the name Vasim comes from. When industry left, the site was left empty for years, and local initiatives showed that its scale and atmosphere suited cultural use.
Redevelopment has since turned the area into a creative quarter. Zecc Architecten and KlokGroep are credited with the renovation, which adapted the building for events while preserving its industrial structure. Visitors can expect an ever-changing programme rather than a permanent collection: music nights, theatre and dance, markets, design and art shows, and workshops where makers and artists use the space. Because the programme shifts, the best approach is to look at the current agenda before heading out.
The setting is part of the experience. The NYMA complex lies on the Waal side of the city, and the neighbouring riverside is a good place for a walk or a bike ride. From the centre you can cycle there in a short time, and it combines well with the rest of Nijmegen's attractions, which include Museum Het Valkhof, the Stevenskerk, the Mariënburgkapel and the shopping street Lange Hezelstraat. Kronenburgerpark offers green space for a break.
De Vasim suits people interested in industrial heritage and urban renewal, creative visitors who enjoy discovering cultural spaces off the beaten path, and locals looking for events with a youthful, experimental edge. It is not a traditional sight with fixed opening hours, so treat it as an event destination, and consider planning your visit around something specific on the programme.
