Andrieskerk

The Andrieskerk is the village church of Eck en Wiel, a small community on the Nederrijn in the Betuwe, the fruit-growing river region of Gelderland. It is a Protestant church, part of the Dutch Reformed tradition, and it stands in the middle of a landscape of orchards, meadows and dikes. Like many churches in the Dutch river area, it is dedicated to a saint, in this case Saint Andrew, though it has been Protestant since the Reformation. In a village this size, it is more than a place of worship: it is a landmark, a meeting place and a symbol of continuity.

Village churches of this type usually combine a simple nave with a tower, and the Andrieskerk is no exception. The brick tower rises above the surrounding trees and fields, and it is visible from the paths and the dike. The origins of the building go back several centuries, and over time it has been repaired and altered, so its appearance reflects different periods. Inside, you can expect a plain, whitewashed interior with wooden pews, a pulpit and an organ, as in most Reformed churches. Concerts and community gatherings are sometimes held in the building, and it is worth asking locally or checking the village's announcements if you hope to see inside. Treat the church as part of a walk rather than a destination in itself, and respect the quiet of the place, particularly on Sundays.

The setting is what makes the stop rewarding. Eck en Wiel lies on the south bank of the Nederrijn, the Lower Rhine, close to the town of Rhenen on the opposite bank, and the river landscape of floodplains and dikes is attractive for cycling and walking. The Betuwe is best known for its orchards, and in spring the apple and pear blossom turns the fields white and pink, which is the most beautiful time to visit. The Betuwsch Badhuys, a local venue in the village, gives a place to stop for refreshments.

The church suits cyclists, walkers, photographers and those interested in village life and heritage. A short stop of half an hour is enough, and it combines well with a ride along the river.
